What is Hines Ward’s Net Worth?
Hines Ward is a retired American football wide receiver with a fortune of $18 million. He is best known today as an offensive assistant coach for the New York Jets, though he also had a long and impressive career. When Hines was an NFL player, he wowed fans as a wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers. During his career, he became the team’s all-time leader in receptions, yards and touchdowns. Other honors include the 2005 Super Bowl MVP award.
Outside of football, Ward pursued a successful entertainment career, appearing on TV shows such as “Dancing with the Stars” and “The Walking Dead.” He is also known for his cameo appearance in The Dark Knight Rises. Additionally, he was an analyst for NBC’s “American Soccer Night” from 2012 to 2015. Ward later worked as an analyst at networks such as CNN and HLN.

Ward is somewhat unique in the American football world because he was born in Seoul, South Korea. Hines Edward Ward Jr. was born on March 8, 1976 in Seoul, South Korea. His mother, Kim Young-hee, is Korean, while his father, an African-American, served in South Korea as a member of the U.S. military. Although the two parents initially lived in Atlanta and East Point, Georgia, Ward Sr. soon set off on a mission to Germany. A year later, when Ward Jr. was about two years old, his parents divorced.
Hines initially lived with his mother, but was raised by his grandmother. Ward Sr. complained in court that his mother could not adequately raise him because he did not speak fluent English. It took a few more years before Hines was reunited with his mother. During this period, Ward Sr. did not provide Kim Young Hee with child support and neglected to visit his son regularly. To this day, Hines Ward says he has not reconciled with his father.
Ward Jr. quickly showed his athleticism in high school, starting out as a great quarterback. He also played well in baseball and was even drafted by the Florida Marlins in 1994. However, Ward then went on to play football for the University of Georgia. This is the first time he’s started playing wide receiver, although he also plays guard at times. Then he went on to play quarterback as a sophomore and was doing pretty well. However, in his final two years, he returned to his role as receiver. All told, Hines has the second-most receiving yards of any player in school history.
Interestingly, Ward later found out that he was Missing Anterior cruciate ligament after college. It was later determined that the ligament must have been removed or lost in some way due to a bicycle accident in childhood.

Starting in 1998, Hines Ward played his entire NFL career for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He initially signed a three-year, $885,000 contract. He proved to be a valuable player in 2001 when he signed a four-year, $9.5 million extension. 2002 was arguably the best season of his career, but he would go on to win Super Bowls in 2005 and 2008. In 2009, he signed a four-year, $22 million contract with a $3 million signing bonus. In 2012, he retired after being released by the Steelers.

Ward is considered one of the best catchers in NFL history. That being said, he’s often criticized for hitting a defender’s blindside, which tends to cause serious damage. It got so bad that the NFL was forced to create a new rule that would ban these types of hitting in the future, dubbed the “Hines Ward Rule.”

In 2012, it was reported that Ward was selling a $5 million property in Atlanta. Designed by Hines from the ground up, the home is located in Sandy Springs. Ward’s home has 12,000 square feet and two three-car garages on Riverside Drive, known for its wealthy residents. Other amenities include a basketball court, heated saltwater swimming pool and cathedral ceilings. In 2012, the home had been on the market several times for a whopping $7.50. He originally bought the land in 2006 for $1 million.
A few years later, the house reappeared on the market for $5 million. In addition, Hines reportedly rented out the home for $50,000 a month — mostly for film production companies and well-known actors. The studio was able to book the house for as little as $15,000 a day for a variety of shoots. Later in 2017, it went public again for $5.5 million. He eventually sold the house in 2019 for about $3.7 million.
In 2020, Ward reportedly sold another property in Georgia. The home, located near Alpharetta, is on the market for $1.85 million. Compared to his last real estate deal, the deal closed quickly, as he found a buyer within weeks of listing the home for $1.9 million. Located in an affluent gated community near Milton Manor Golf and Country Club, this five bedroom home sits on 1.07 acres. Outside, there is a stunning view of the 11th hole of the nearby golf course. In addition, there is a swimming pool. Inside there is a floor-to-ceiling fireplace and marble floors.
Legal Issues
In 2011, Hines Ward was arrested in Georgia for DUI. In 2012, the charges were dropped due to a plea deal. He then pleaded guilty to reckless driving and received a year of probation, 80 hours of community service and a $2,000 fine.
