Hillary Clinton is an American politician and the 2016 Democratic Party’s presidential candidate for the United States. She is the former US First Lady and the 67th US Secretary of State. Clinton was born Hillary Diane Rodham on October 26, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in the suburb of Park Ridge. Her father, Hugh Ellsworth, owns a fabric shop, and her mother, Dorothy Emma, is a homemaker. She has two younger brothers, Hugh and Anthony.
Clinton attended Eastern Maine High School, where she was active in the student body and the National Honor Society. During high school, she also campaigned for Richard Nixon and Barry Goldwater. Clinton continued her studies at Wellesley College, earning a BA in Political Science in 1969. She then studied law at Yale Law School, graduating with honors in 1973. In addition to law, she has taken several courses on children and medicine. Yale Children’s Research Center (1973-1974).

Clinton worked with U.S. Senator Walter Mondale in 1971 and then with Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern in 1972. She met Bill Clinton while teaching at the University of Arkansas Law School in Fayetteville. The two married in 1975. Clinton served as First Lady of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and from 1983 to 1992. In 1993, after her husband became president, she became the first lady of the United States. She became New York’s first female senator in 2001, a position she held until 2009.
Clinton’s first presidential campaign ended in a loss in 2008 to Democratic nominee Barack Obama. She was the 67th US Secretary of State in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2013. Clinton came under heavy criticism in 2014 after it was revealed that she had used a personal email address she used to handle official government business while she was secretary of state. Still, she announced in April 2015 that she would run for the 2016 presidential election. She defeated her closest rival, Bernie Sanders, to become the first female Democratic presidential nominee. Her running mate is Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia. Clinton lost the 2016 presidential election to Republican candidate Donald Trump.
