early life
Herb Alpert was born on March 31, 1935 in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in Boyle Heights on the east side of Los Angeles and is the son of Tillie and Louis Leib Alpert. He was born into a musical family, and his parents were Jewish immigrants who immigrated to the United States from Ukraine and Romania. Herb started learning the trumpet at the age of 8, and participated in the dance when he was a teenager. He attended Fairfax High School, graduated in 1952, and then joined the army. While in the army, Herb would play the trumpet at the ceremony and hope to pursue a career in acting. When he returned from the army, he attended the University of Southern California, where he was a member of the famous marching band USC Trojan Marching Band.
Music career
When he became the songwriter of Keen Records, his music career officially began. Beginning in 1957, Herb began to create and record music professionally for the first time. He built a small recording studio in his garage and wrote several twenty hits with a musician named Rob Weerts. Many songs that Alpert wrote or co-written in the past two years have become the top 20 hits, including Sam Cooke’s “(What A) Wonderful World”. In 1960, Herb started his recording career at Dot Records under the name of Dore Alpert. “Tell It to the Birds” was recorded as the first album of Carnival Records.
Herb is probably the most famous musician because he founded the band “Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass”. In the early 1960s, when he heard a brass band playing in a bullfighting competition in Tijuana, Mexico, he had the idea of creating his iconic sound. To capture this iconic sound, Herb dubbed his trumpet on two different tape drives. Initially, Tijuana Brass was just Herb dubbing his own trumpet, which was slightly out of sync. He personally funded his first single “The Lonely Bull” and it spread on radio waves until it became the top 10 in the fall of 1962. The band’s album “Whipped Cream and Other Delights” was the first album in 1965 and has remained on the billboard charts for more than three years. Personal life and philanthropy
Alpert founded the Herb Alpert Foundation and Alpert Art Prize in the 1980s with the California Academy of Art. The foundation supports youth and arts education and environmental issues, and helps fund various PBS projects. In 2012, the foundation provided more than $5 million in grants to Harlem Art Institute to enable the college to repay its debts and set up a scholarship program for poor students. In 2013, the school building was renamed Herb Alpert Center. In 2016, his foundation also donated US$10.1 million to Los Angeles City College to provide tuition-free education for all music majors in the school. In 2020, Alpert provided another $9.7 million to Harlem Art Institute to upgrade its facilities.
Alpert married Sharon Mae Lubin from 1956 to 1971. They gave birth to two children together. Alpert married recording artist Rani Hall in December 1973. They have a daughter.
