Heath Farwell was born in Fontana, California in 1981 and played high school football, baseball and track and field at Corona High School in Corona, California.
He earned all league honors in his junior and senior seasons, with 96 tackles and 12 sacks as a junior and 129 tackles and 10 sacks as a senior. Heath Falwell played college football at San Diego State University. As a senior, he played in all 11 games for San Diego State, ranking third on the team with 69 steals, leading the team with 7 sacks, 2 interceptions and 4 forcings mistake. As a member of the Aztec football team, he completed 180 tackles, 13.5 sacks and nine forced turnovers in three seasons. Heathfalwell was unselected in the 2005 NFL draft and was subsequently signed by the Minnesota Vikings. Falwell was named special teams MVP at the end of his rookie season with the Vikings.
