Harry Dean Stanton is an American actor, guitarist and singer. He is known for films such as The Godfather Part II (1974), Luke the Cool Hand (1967), Paris, Texas (1984) and The Repo Man (1984). He played memorable roles in the TV series “Big Love” and “Twin Peaks.” Stanton was born on July 14, 1926 in West Irvine, Kentucky. His father, Sheridan, was a tobacco farmer and his mother, Ersel, was a hairdresser. He has three younger brothers, Ralph, Archie and Stan. Stanton attended Lafayette High School and then the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. He studied journalism and broadcasting arts, but dropped out before completing his degree. During World War II, Stanton served in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a cook during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.

During the 1970s he appeared in films such as Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), The Godfather II (1974) and Alien (1979). He voiced the character “Balthazar” in the animated film Rango (2012). He has worked with many filmmakers, including Monte Herman, David Lynch and Sam Peckinpa.

Stanton played “Travis Henderson” in the road movie “Paris, Texas” (1984), opposite Nastassja Kinski. The film is directed by Wim Wenders. Other films of the 1980s include Repo Man (1984) with Emilio Estevez, Pretty in Pink (1986) with Molly Ringwald and The Last Temptation (1988) with Willem Dafoe. His recent films include The Green Mile (1999), Seven Psycho (2012), The Avengers (2012) and Lucky (2017). Stanton played “Romain Grant” in the HBO drama “Big Love” (2006-10).
