Born in “Arminta Ross” on January 29, 1820, Tubman lived the life of a slave. Her parents “Benjamin Ross” and “Harriet Green” were slaves. She had eight siblings who were also slaves. Tubman suffered a severe head injury during his adolescence. For the rest of her life, she suffered from epilepsy, headaches and nightmares.

Tubman and her two siblings, “Ben” and “Henry,” escaped slavery on September 17, 1849. After the brothers reconsidered, the three returned to the plantation. Soon after, Tubman escaped alone. She used the Underground Railroad to travel to the Free State of Pennsylvania. Tubman made numerous trips to free her family and many others from slavery. She was nicknamed “Moses” for her leadership. The Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1850 to capture slaves and return them to their masters. Tubman opposed the law by directing fugitives north into Canada. In 1858, she was introduced to the abolitionist “John Brown”. In 1859, she assisted him in recruiting men to raid slave owners at Harper’s Ferry.

During the Civil War, Tubman served as a nurse and cook in the Union Army. She later served as an armed scout and spy. She led the raid on Combahee Ferry, which resulted in the liberation of hundreds of slaves. Tubman spent his later years at his home in Auburn, New York. She is also a strong supporter of women’s right to vote in elections.
