Born on January 17, 1940 in Kaiserslautern, Germany, Hector is one of the founders of the German software giant SAP. He graduated from Saarland University and worked at the IVM in Mannheim, where he had the idea to create a potential management standard software.
Later in 1972, Hector and his partners Hasso Plattner, Dietmar Hopp, Claus Wellenreuther and Klaus Tschira founded the software company SAP AG, also known as SAP-System Analysis and Program Development, in Walldorf. After going public, the software company grew from strength to strength, making Hector one of the richest men in the world. In addition, Hector opened up the North American market for SAP, but then sold his stake in 1997 in 1996 after a spat with a partner. Currently, he invests in startup software, health and biotech companies. A mathematician by training, Hector holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Karlsruhe in recognition of his support of talented students in the natural sciences, mathematics and technology by running the so-called Hector Symposium. Additionally, he has donated substantial funds to AIDS and cancer research as well as historic preservation and the arts through his charitable foundation.
