Hamid Karzai was born on December 24, 1957 in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He is descended from the Pashtun and Popalzai tribes. He studied at Himachal Pradesh University and practises Sunni Islam. Karzai’s political career culminated in the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001. Karzai won 21 of 34 provinces in the 2004 presidential election, making him Afghanistan’s first democratically elected political leader.

Despite the discontent among the public, Karzai was re-elected as president in 2009. Since Karzai’s presidency, ties with NATO have been strong, specifically with the United States as the country remained a key factor in rebuilding after the war.
