Halsey was born on September 29, 1994 in Edison, New Jersey, her original name is Ashley Nicole Wright Frankiepan. Her mother Nicole is an EMT, and her father Chris is a manager of a car dealership. Frangipane grew up in several cities with her younger brothers Dante and Sevian. Before switching to acoustic guitar at the age of 14, she played cello, violin and viola. She was bullied in high school, attempted suicide and was hospitalized more than twice in the weeks when she was 17 years old. Frangipan was subsequently diagnosed with bipolar disorder and began to abuse drugs and was implicated in a 24-year-old man living on Halsey Street in Brooklyn.
