Hal Douglas was born Harold Cohen on September 1, 1924, in Stamford, Connecticut. His mother died when he was nine, so he and his brother Eddie were raised by his grandparents. Douglas joined the Navy and served during World War II. He majored in theatre from the University of Miami. Douglas began his broadcasting career in 1950, producing voiceovers for various commercials, promos, and trailers. Since then, he has continued to speak out, working to build a fat portfolio in the process. Sometimes confused with Don LaFontaine, he has produced numerous voiceovers for documentaries and promotional voices for The WB, Disney Channel, History Channel, and A&E. Douglas introduced most of his recordings “In a world…”, which became his catchphrase, although there is debate as to whether he or Lafontaine coined the phrase. Douglas was based in New York City, not Los Angeles like most voice actors at the time. In 1988, Douglas moved to Lovettsville, Virginia, where he established his studio and had the opportunity to work from the comfort of his home. Douglas is married to Lois Barrett and has two children. He divorced Douglas and married Ruth Francis, with whom he lived for 43 years until his death on March 7, 2014. His cause of death was pancreatic cancer.
