Gwen Ifill is an American news anchor, journalist and author. She is best known as the host of Washington Weekly and co-anchor of PBS NewsHour. Ifill was born Gwendolyn L. Ifill on September 29, 1955 in New York City. Her parents are Eleanor and Oliver Urcille Ifill, Sr. She has four siblings, Roberto, Earle, Oliver Jr. and Maria. Ifill’s father was a pastor, so the family moved. They live in places like New England, Pennsylvania and Buffalo. Ifill attended Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated in 1977 with a BA in Communication.

Ifill started out as an intern at the Boston Herald. The company hired her in 1977 as a food columnist. She held that position until 1980. Ifill’s early career worked for the Baltimore Evening News, followed by The Washington Post. From 1991 to 1994, she was the White House correspondent for The New York Times. She then spent five years at NBC as Chief Congressional and Political Correspondent (1994-99).
Ifill has been with PBS since 1999. She has served as a host for Washington Weekly and as a senior correspondent for PBS NewsHour. In August 2013, she was promoted to NewsHour’s anchor and executive editor. Ifill hosted the 2004 vice presidential debate between Dick Cheney and John Edwards, and the 2008 vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin. Her book, Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Obama Era, was published in 2009. Ifill received the Fourth Industry Award in 2015. She was awarded the John Prime Minister’s Journalism Excellence Award in 2016.

Gwen Ifill passed away on November 14, 2016 at the age of 61. Her official cause of death was complications from uterine cancer. She reportedly died in hospice after months of treatment. Ifill has never been married and has no children. She leaves behind two brothers and a sister.
