Born in Tanzania in 1933, she dropped out of school at the age of 12 to take care of her ailing father’s textile business. In 1976, amid political turmoil in Tanzania, she fled to the UK with her husband and four children.
Although she didn’t speak English at the time, Bhatia used her life savings to buy a bed and breakfast for £190,000 and rented each room for £3 a night. Having lost her husband at the time, she had to take over the business, working 16 hours a day. Later, Bhatia bought five hotels in Paddington, three of which she sold the GWR Hotel in 1986 for £10 million. In 1990, she also acquired the Holiday Inn Gatwick. This earned her a great reputation among Britons, as she became the first woman to hold a Holiday Inn license in the UK franchise. In 1998, Bhatia bought the Bayswater Grand Hotel for £16.5 million, and in 2007 the famous Waldorf Astoria in London for £175 million. An elderly woman, she recently handed over the business to her son Asif. Bhatia is a conservative woman who refuses to use mobile phones, computers and even calculators. Until a few years ago, she was driving a 16-year-old Mercedes.
