Grace VanderWaal is an American singer, songwriter, and ukulele player. She is best known as the winner of America’s Got Talent in 2016. Van der Waal was born on January 15, 2004 in Lenexa, Kansas. Her parents are Tina and David. She has two older siblings, Jacob and Olivia. VanderWaal grew up in Saffin, New York, where she attended Saffin Middle School. After America’s Got Talent, she turned to homeschooling and online classes.

Vanderwaal started her musical journey at the age of three. She was influenced by artists such as Twenty One Pilots and Katy Perry. Impressed by her young talent, her family signed her up for piano lessons at the age of 4. Van der Wael later took saxophone lessons and bought her first ukulele at the age of 11. She mastered ukulele by watching YouTube tutorials. VanderWaal plays regularly in her school’s marching and concert bands. In February 2017, VanderWaal performed atop the Empire State Building in Manhattan, New York. She performed at the 2017 Disney Radio Music Awards. This marked her first awards show performance. VanderWaal’s recent tracks include “Moonlight” and “Sick of Being Told”. She won the 2017 Teen Choice Award for “Choice Next Big Thing.”
