Hayward began his basketball career at Brownsburg High School in Brownsburg, Indiana. In his senior year, he led the team to the Indiana 4A state championship. He averaged 18 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game, and was selected to the state’s first team in the 2007-08 season. He is also very competitive in tennis. Hayward received scholarships from IUPUI, Purdue University and Butler. He is committed to studying computer engineering at Butler University. Hayward played two seasons of basketball for the Butler Bulldogs. He averaged 14.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game. His college honors include 2 Horizon League first team and 2010 Horizon League Player of the Year. He participated in the 2009 U-19 World Championship as a member of the US team and won the gold medal.
Hayward was selected by the Utah Jazz with the 9th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. From 2010 to 2017, he played for the Jazz for 7 seasons. As a rookie, he averaged 16.9 minutes per game and 5.4 points. He participated in the 2012 Rising Star Challenge as a member of the Chuck team. Hayward became the starter in the 2011-12 season. In the 2016-17 regular season, he averaged a career-high 21.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. His performance earned him a place on the 2017 NBA All-Star team. In the 2017 playoffs, he averaged 24.1 points per game. Hayward signed a 4-year contract with the Boston Celtics in July 2017. He dislocated an ankle and fractured his tibia within 6 minutes of the team’s regular season opener. The incident took place on October 17, 2017, against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Hayward was traded to the Charlotte Hornets in 2020.
