Born Gordon Peter Getty on December 20, 1933, Getty studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 1934 and received a Bachelor of Arts in Music. The fourth child of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, Gordon took over his father’s $2 billion trust after his death in 1976. He even got into the oil business to please his father; in 1986 he couldn’t resist selling Getty Oil to Texaco for $10 billion. Among other things, he started a company called ReFlow, which temporarily buys shares in mutual funds to save on commissions and taxes. A philanthropist, he has donated to numerous causes through his charitable trust, the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation, to which he donated $3 million in 2002. In a variety of industries, Getty is also an accomplished composer of classical music, with compositions including the opera Fat Jack, Joan and the Bells, several piano pieces, and a series of choral works. As such, he and his wife Ann Gilbert actively supported the fine arts. The wealthy father of seven currently lives in San Francisco, California.
