Gordie Howe is a Canadian professional ice hockey player and 23-time NHL All-Star. Known as “Mr. Hockey,” he was voted the best in every sport. He played 26 seasons in the National Hockey League and six in the World Hockey Association. Howe was born on March 31, 1928, to parents Catherine and Albert in Flora, Saskatchewan, Canada. He has eight siblings, including Vic, who also plays in the NHL. He grew up in Saskatoon, where she worked briefly as a construction worker.

Howe began his hockey career at King George Community School. The team won consecutive championships in 1941-42 and 1944. He also played bantam hockey with King George Sports Club. Howe was approached by a New York Rangers scout in 1943, but he turned down their offer. The following year, he signed with the Detroit Red Wings. He played a full season with the Omaha Cavaliers (1945-46) before returning to the Red Wings.
Howe is 6 feet tall and plays on the right wing. In October 1946, he made his NHL debut with the Red Wings. He played 25 seasons with the Red Wings and won five Stanley Cups. He was the No. 1 All-Star in the NHL 12 times and the No. 2 All-Star in the NHL nine times. He has won the Art Ross and Hart Memorial Trophy six times. Howe retired from the ice in 1971 and was inducted into the International Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972. He made a grand return in 1973 and played six seasons with the WHA. In 1997, he played a game against the Detroit Vipers in the International Hockey League. Howe totaled 801 goals and 1,850 points in his NHL career. In his honor, the NHL adopted a “Gordie Howe hat-trick.” It includes goals, assists and fights in a single game.
