Glenn Campbell is an American country singer, songwriter, guitarist and actor. He released more than 60 albums, including I Got to Phoenix (1967), Wichita Lyman (1968) and Rhinestone Cowboys (1975). He hosted the musical/comedy show The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour (1969-72) on CBS. Glenn Travis Campbell was born on April 22, 1936 in Billstown, Arkansas. He is 1 of 12 children. His father Wesley was a sharecropper and his mother Carrie Dyer.

Campbell got his first guitar when he was 4 years old. His uncle taught him the basics, and a few years later he started appearing on local radio stations. Campbell dropped out of school in his teens to focus on music. He played in the “Sandia Mountain Boys” band with his uncle Dick Bill. At 18, he formed his own group, the Western Wranglers. Campbell moved to Los Angeles, California in the late 1950s to become a studio musician. He worked briefly with the rock band Champs. His next gig was at American Music as a songwriter. He also performed with other session musicians as a member of the “Wrecking Crew”.
Campbell’s debut single “Turn Around, Look at Me” was released in 1961. It earned him a record deal with Capitol Records. He has since collaborated with musicians such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard and Nat King Cole. Campbell’s debut studio album, Big Bluegrass Special, was released in November 1962. It features the Green River Boys. His first country album, Gentle on My Mind, was released in August 1967. The album was certified platinum by the RIAA. It won two Grammy Awards, including one for Best Country and Western Recording. Campbell then released the album When I Arrive in Phoenix in November 1967. His 12th studio album, Wichita Lineman (1968), topped the charts in the United States and Canada. The single “Wichita Lineman” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2000. Campbell’s other albums include Galveston (1969), Rhinestone Cowboy (1975), Southern Nights (1977) and Ghost on the Canvas (2011). His 64th and final studio album, Adios, was released by Big Machine Records in June 2017. Campbell has won 10 Grammy Awards and 10 Academy of Country Music Awards. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005.
In addition to music, Campbell is an actor and TV presenter. His first role was “Larry Dana” in the ABC series The FBI (1967). He appeared in the film True Grit (1969) with John Wayne and Kim Darby. Campbell hosted his own musical/comedy variety show Glenn Campbell’s Good Times (1969-72) on CBS. He played “Norwood Pratt” in the comedy drama “Norwood” (1970). The film is based on Charles Portis’ 1966 novel of the same name. Other film appearances include Any Way (1980) with Clint Eastwood, Uphill with Roy Clark (1986) and Graffiti (1991). He has appeared in the documentaries The Wrecking Crew (2008) and I’ll Be Me (2014).
