She is best known for directing the films Love and Basketball and Disappearing Behavior. She attended UCLA’s School of Film and was awarded the Gene Reynolds Directing Scholarship and the Ray Stark Distinguished Undergraduate Memorial Scholarship.

She first created and directed the short film Stitches in 1991. From 1992 to 1993, she wrote for the TV series Another World. In 1994, she was the story editor, writer and executive story editor for the television series South Central. Gina wrote for the TV series “Sweet Justice” in 1994, and wrote and co-produced the “Courthouse” series in 1995. From 1998 to 1999, she wrote as a consultant to the producers of the television series Felicity. She also directed episodes of the TV series The Bernie Mac Show and Girlfriends, and wrote the episodes of Everybody Hates Chris. Prince-Bythewood wrote and directed the 2000 film Love and Basketball. She produced the 2003 film Biker Boyz and directed and wrote the screenplay for the 2008 film The Secret Life of Bees. She wrote and directed the 2014 film Beyond the Lights. Gina has won three Black Reel Awards, a Humanitas Award, an Image Award and an Independent Spirit Award. She was also nominated for two Daytime Emmys.
