Jill Stein is an American politician, physician and environmental health advocate. She was the Green Party’s nominee in the 2012 and 2016 presidential elections. Jill Ellen Stein was born on May 14, 1950, in Highland Park, Illinois. Her parents are Gladys and Joseph. Stein attended Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She graduated summa cum laude in 1973. She completed her law degree at Harvard Medical School in 1979.

As a physician, Stein has practiced and taught medicine for over 20 years. She has worked at institutions including Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare in New England. Stein turned to activism in the 1990s in an effort to promote a healthy environment. She works with nonprofits and community groups to combat environmental injustice. They address issues such as water pollution, atmospheric mercury and toxic waste sites. Stein later became an advocate for campaign finance reform. In 1998, she helped the Massachusetts Clean Elections Act campaign. The law was later repealed by the Democratic legislature.
Stein ran for governor of Massachusetts in 2002 as a member of the Green Rainbow Party. She lost the race to Republican Mitt Romney. In 2004, she also made an unsuccessful bid for the Massachusetts Representative to be Secretary of the Commonwealth in 2006. Stein won a town meeting in Lexington, Massachusetts, in 2005. She was re-elected for the second semester in 2008. Stein ran another unsuccessful 2010 Massachusetts gubernatorial race. She lost her seat to Democrat Deval Patrick.
Stein ran against Democratic nominee Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election. Her slogan is “America’s Green New Deal.” She ended up losing that game. Stein ran for president of the United States for the second time in 2016. She fought a losing battle with Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. She ended the race with 1 percent of the national popular vote.
