He attended his first concerts as a teenager, and in 1976 Gilberto made his first recording as a backup singer for the Mario Ortiz Orchestra, and was soon followed by the La Grande Orchestra Recruit, become the lead singer. Gilberto spent two years in the orchestra, during which time he met Elias Lopez, who helped shape and polish him as a singer. By 1986 he had his own band and signed to Combo Records, and a string of hits followed: Good Vibration, De Amor y Salsa (Of Love and Salsa), Punto de Vista (Point of View), Vivir Sin Ella (Living without her) and Perspectiva.
