He attended his first concerts as a teenager, and in 1976 Gilberto made his first recording as a backup singer for the Mario Ortiz Orchestra, and was soon followed by the La Grande Orchestra Recruit, become the lead singer. Gilberto spent two years in the orchestra, during which time he met Elias Lopez, who helped shape and polish him as a singer. By 1986 he had his own band and signed to Combo Records, and a string of hits followed: Good Vibration, De Amor y Salsa (Of Love and Salsa), Punto de Vista (Point of View), Vivir Sin Ella (Living without her) and Perspectiva. Gilberto Santa Rosa was the first tropical salsa singer to perform in concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall Theater, where he played his unique version of the salsa tune Represento (I Represent) as the opening track. The event was recorded live in the lobby and later released as an album. In 1990, Gilberto joined the all-star La Puertoriqueña project that included Andy Montañez. That same year, he won the Billboard Lo Nuestro Award for Best Male Artist. During the 2000s, Gilberto continued to produce albums, perform live and win awards. “Contraste” was certified Gold and Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in June 2008, and his album reportedly sold over 1,500,000 copies. On July 5, 2008, Gilberto became the first salsa singer to perform at the Palais de la Musica in Barcelona – an event that sold out to 2,000 spectators.
On July 17, 2010, he participated in the opening ceremony of the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games. Gilberto Santa Rosa was also awarded the City Key by Union City, New Jersey and a star on the Celia Cruz Park Walk of Fame in Union City. As of 2010, he holds the record for the most number one albums on the Billboard Tropical Albums chart.
