Geraldine Anne Ferraro (August 26, 1935 – March 26, 2011) was born and raised in New York City. She started her career as a public school teacher before training as a lawyer. In 1974, she joined the Queens District Attorney’s Office to lead the new Special Victims Bureau. After four years of uncovering sex crimes, child abuse, and domestic violence at the Bureau, she was elected to the House in 1978. Wholeheartedly devoted to her work, Geraldine Ferraro quickly rose in the party hierarchy while heading towards equity for women in the areas Salary, pension and retirement plans. As a result, she became a symbol of the feminist movement in the United States and a fierce opponent of President Reagan. When Ferraro was selected as former vice president and presidential candidate Walter Mondale’s running mate in 1984, she actually became the first female vice presidential nominee. The election, however, ended with Mondale and Ferraro being overwhelmingly defeated by incumbent President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George HW. Bush. She then ran for a U.S. Senate seat from New York in 1992 and 1998, losing both primary elections. At the same time, she was an alternate delegate to the 1993 World Conference on Human Rights. Geraldine Anne Ferraro died on March 26, 2011, at the age of 75, twelve years after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
