George Takei is an American actor, director, LGBT rights activist and author. He is best known for his role as Lieutenant “Sulu” in the original Star Trek TV series and feature film. George Hosato Takei was born on April 20, 1937 in Los Angeles, California to parents Fumiko and Takekuma. He has two siblings, Henry and Nancy. Takei attended Los Angeles High School and then UC Berkeley. He received a bachelor’s degree in drama in 1960 and a master’s degree in 1964. He also studied at Shakespeare Academy in the UK and Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan.
Profession
Takei began his career as a voice actor in the mid-1950s. His early voice acting performances included Godzilla Raids Again (1955) and Rodan (1956). He then had small roles in live-action films such as Hell to Eternity (1960), Red Line 7000 (1965) and The Green Beret (1968). He also made guest appearances in the series Perry Mason, The Twilight Zone and Death Valley Days.
Takei played the breakthrough role of Lieutenant “Su Luguang” in the sci-fi TV series Star Trek. The show ran on NBC from September 1966 to June 1969 for 79 episodes. The series also stars William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelly. Sulu’s character was repeated in “Star Trek: The Animated Series” (1973-74) and later in six feature films.
Takei’s TV credits include The Six Million Dollar Man, The Hawaiian Five, The Howard Stern Show, and Supah Ninjas. He has voiced The Simpsons, The Golden Possible, Futurama, and Mulan. He made cameo appearances in the films “You Don’t Mess With Zohan” (2008) and “Entourage” (2015) starring Adam Sandler and Kevin Connolly. His stage credits include Year of the Dragon (1974), Baptism (1990) and Loyalty (2012).
Takei’s star was inscribed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1986. He was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun and Golden Light by the Japanese government in 2004. Takei’s work in the LGBT community has earned him the LGBT Humanities Award and the GLAAD Vito Russo Award. In 2015, he received the JANM Medal of Distinguished Honor for his work at the Japanese-American National Museum.
