At Brown High School, Sheehan worked as a car wash, a textile mill and a school janitor for some time as a young man. He did, however, graduate from the Evans School of Business and then began raising funds to buy several schools and integrate them into the “Rutledge Education System.” But instead, he sold the school and bought the Charlotte Hornets in 1987 for $32.5 million. In addition to the Charlotte Hornets, Sheehan owns minor league baseball teams the Charlotte Kings and the Gastonia Rangers and American football team the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks. In 1973, Shinn established the George Shinn Foundation to provide scholarships to outstanding students. The foundation also currently assists with disaster relief activities and donations. Shinn announced in 2009 that he had prostate cancer, but was fortunate to have beaten the deadly disease by March 2010. As a result, the George Shinn Foundation is now focused on increasing awareness and early detection of prostate cancer. The foundation also educates young pastors at Orchard Baptist Bible College in North Carolina to participate in ministry and relief efforts in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In addition, he has authored several books, most notably The American Dream Still Lives, Leadership Development, and You Must Believe. The NBA took over the deal in 2010 when Sheehan couldn’t sell his stake in the Charlotte Hornets due to the team’s financial problems. Shin has three grown children: Susan, Chad and Chris, and is currently married to Denise, president of the George Shinn Foundation.
