Born in 1936 to a Jewish family in New York, George Lindeman made his fortune through various businesses. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, he began his career as president of the pharmaceutical company Smith, Miller and Patch and made his fortune.
Lindeman began his billionaire career in 1971 when he sold his family business, Permalens, an eye care company, to Cooper Labs for $75 million. The next year, he founded the cable provider Vision Cable, but a decade later he sold it to the Newhouse brothers, Samuel, Jr. and Donald for $220 million. Soon, Lindeman founded a cell phone company, Metro Mobile, which he sold to Bell Atlantic in 1991 for $2.5 billion. He then moved into the pipeline business as CEO of the natural gas company Southern Associates. In early 2012, Lindemann sold Southern Union to Texas-based billionaire Kelcy Warren, owner of Energy Transfer Equity, for more than $5 billion. The New Yorker billionaire currently owns 19 Spanish-speaking radio stations, and since 1982 has served as president of Cellular Dynamics and managing general partner of Activated Communications Limited Partnership. In addition, Lindemann has been a General Partner of Panhandle Eastern since 1990 and is also a board member of HI Europe Limited and Hudson Clean Energy Partners. In addition, Lindeman is a strong supporter of the Jewish History Center and the Long Beach Village Jewish Federation, and he has donated substantial funds to Republican candidates including Virginia Fox, Ed Royce, Michelle Bachman, Danny Reber Greg and Newt Gingrich.
