Ratzenby was born on September 5, 1939 in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia. His father, George Lazenby, was a railroad worker, and his mother, Sheila, worked in a department store. He has an older sister, Barbara, who has become an excellent dancer. Lazenby attended Goulburn Public Schools and Goulburn High School until 1954. His family then moved to Queanbeyan because of his father’s work.

Originally joining the Australian Army, Lazenby became a used car salesman and mechanic in London, moving there in pursuit of the woman he loved. While selling cars, he was spotted by a scout who encouraged him to become a model. He became famous for appearing in a commercial for Frye’s Chocolate Bar and was voted Model of the Year in 1966.
In 1968, Lazenby met producer Albert R. Broccoli while getting a haircut at the same barbershop. Then he saw an ad for Lazenby’s Fry, even though Lazenby would make a good James Bond. Former Bond’s Sean Connery had left the role the year before. Lazenby took a screen test and participated in the test wearing a costume that was appropriate for the character. He landed the role and starred in “Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.

However, even before the film was released, Lazenby decided not to take on the role of Bond, despite many in his life telling him that he should keep making Bond films. Lazenby described his dissatisfaction with how little his opinion was taken into account in his first film, and decided he would prefer to make commercials and pursue other acting opportunities. However, he occasionally reprises the role of Bond, albeit not in James Bond feature films, in various parodies and unofficial Bond projects.
Ratzenby made his next film, Universal Warriors, in 1971, which he helped create. He described the film as “anti-gun and anti-Bond”. In 1972, starred in “Who Saw Her Dead?” ” and received positive reviews for its performance. In 1973 he appeared on the BBC’s “Play For Today”.
After that, Lazenby said he was broke and that he spent all the money he made from playing Bond. However, he went on to make three films for Golden Harvest between 1974 and 1976 – “Stoner,” “The Hong Konger” and “The Queen’s Ransom.” He then returned to Australia to star in some commercials and TV movies.
Lazenby then moved to Hollywood in the late 1970s to revive his career. He has had roles in projects such as “Hawaii 5-0,” “Byzantine Nights,” and “Superboy.” Throughout the early 1990s, he appeared in numerous television projects and produced for television movies. Lazenby married his girlfriend of three years, Chrissie Townson, in 1973. They have two children together – Melanie and Zachary. Melanie later became a real estate agent in New York. Zachary developed a malignant brain tumor at the age of 11 and died at 19. Lazenby and Townsend later divorced.
In 2002, Ratzenby married former tennis pro Pam Shriver. The couple have three children together, including twins in 2005. They filed for divorce after six years of marriage.
