George Floyd is an African American security guard, truck driver and former rapper. On May 25, 2020, Freud was killed by a white arrest officer, Derek Chauvin, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is 46 years old. The other three law enforcement officers at the scene were Tou Thao, Thomas K. Lane and J. Alexander Kueng. In the last moments of his life, Freud can be heard begging “I can’t breathe” many times. This is the same thing as Eric Garner said when Ghana was fatally strangled by the police in 2014. Freud’s death has since triggered nationwide protests and riots.

George Perry Floyd was born on October 14, 1973 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He has 3 siblings, Bridget, Felonis and Terrence. Freud grew up in Houston, Texas, where he attended Yates High School. During his tenure, he was an outstanding athlete, having played on the football and basketball teams. At the close end, he led the Yates football team to the 1992 State Championship. Freud continued his studies at Texas A&M University at Kingsville in 1995. He left in 1997.

Career and death
After graduating from college, Freud gave up sports and returned to his hometown of Houston. He joined and performed briefly as a member of the rap group “Screwed Up Click” with DJ Screw. Freud’s stage name at the time was “Great Freud”. He participated in projects such as DJ Screw’s Diary of the Founder (2004) and Screw Zoo Freestyle (2018). Freud spent his later years in Minnesota. He supported himself by working as a truck driver and security guard at a restaurant in Minneapolis. Due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, Freud lost his safety job.

On May 25, 2020, Freud was killed while arrested in the Podhorn community of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was accused of using counterfeit 20-dollar bills in a local store. When he was handcuffed and facing the ground, Officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee to Freud’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. In this tragic incident, police officer J. Alexander Kueng supported Freud’s back, while police officer Thomas K. Lane supported his leg. The fourth officer, Tou Thao, stood nearby, preventing any bystanders from interfering. I heard Freud say “I can’t breathe” many times, but no one heard his cry.

Officer Derek Michael Chauvin was later arrested and charged with second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He has been engaged in law enforcement for more than 19 years. Before Freud’s death, there were 18 other complaints in his record. It is also worth noting that both Freud and Chauvin worked as security guards at the Latin nightclub “El Nuevo Rodeo”. According to a former owner of the club, their shifts overlapped. The other three arresting policemen Tou Thao, Thomas K. Lane and J. Alexander Kueng were charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder. Since joining the force in 2009, Thao had previously received 6 police behavior complaints.

George Floyd died on May 25, 2020, at the age of 46. According to an independent autopsy conducted by Freud’s family, his death was caused by continuous compression of the neck and suffocation. However, the Hennepin County forensic doctor ruled that he died of cardiac arrest (heart failure) after being restrained by the knee-to-neck technique. Freud is 6 feet 6 inches tall and is African American. He left behind three children, Quincy, Connie and 6-year-old Jaina. After his death, his brother Philonise created a GoFundMe page. As of June 2, 2020, more than $11 million has been raised.
