Gennady “GGG” Golovkin is a Kazakhstan professional boxer and Olympic silver medalist. His professional record is 37 wins and 1 draw. He currently holds the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight titles. Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin was born on April 8, 1982 in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. Besides Kazakh, he speaks German, Russian and English. His Russian father Gennadi was a coal miner and his Korean mother Elizaveta was a laboratory assistant. He had three brothers, Sergey (d. 1994), Vadim (d. 1990) and fraternal twins Maxim.

Golovkin started his training in Karaganda, Kazakhstan under the tutelage of coach Victor Dmitriev. He competed in the 2002 Busan Asian Games at light welterweight and won a gold medal. He won the middleweight gold medal at the 2003 World Championships in Bangkok. Golovkin was awarded an Olympic Solidarity scholarship in late 2002. He represented Kazakhstan at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where he won a silver medal at middleweight. He also won a gold medal at the 2004 Asian Championships in Puerto Princesa. Golovkin competed at the amateur level from 2000 to 2005. His amateur record is 345-5. He lost to Egypt’s Mohamed Hikal at the 2005 World Championships.
Golovkin made his debut against Hungary’s Gabor Balogh in May 2006. From 2006 to 2010, he boxed for the Universum Box-Promotion (UBP) (18 wins, including a vacant WBO Intercontinental Middleweight title). Golovkin terminated his contract with UBP due to lack of direction and growth. He is currently signed to K2 and trains under Abel Sanchez in Big Bear, CA. In August 2010, he won the WBA interim middleweight title by defeating Milton Nunez of Colombia. He defeated American LaJuan Simon in December 2011 for the vacant IBO middleweight title. In June 2014, the WBA promoted Golovkin from middleweight champion to (super) champion. In July 2014, he successfully defended his WBA and IBO title against Daniel Geale of Great Britain.
Golovkin defeated Mexico’s Marco Antonio Rubio for the WBC interim middleweight title in October 2014. He defeated Canada’s David Lemieux for the IBF middleweight title in October 2015. He was promoted to the full champion in 2016 after Canelo Alvarez vacated the WBC middleweight title. GGG and Canelo Alvarez met on September 16, 2017 at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. The game went on for 12 rounds and ended in a draw. Golovkin has a career record of 37 wins (33 by KO), 1 draw and no losses. He was never knocked out or knocked down.
