Gene Wilder is an American actor, comedian, film director and writer. He is known for films such as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles. Wilder was born Jerome Silberman to Jewish parents on June 11, 1933, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His father is William and his mother is Jenny. He had a younger sister named Corinna, who died at the age of 86. Wilder attended Washington High School, followed by the University of Iowa. He graduated in 1955 with a degree in Communication and Dramatic Arts. Wilder also attended the Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol, England. He was drafted into the Army and served two years as a paramedic in the U.S. Army.

Wilder took inspiration from his sister to become an actor. He was also responsible for keeping her entertained and laughing after her mother was diagnosed with rheumatic fever. Wilder made his debut in high school as “Balthasar” in Romeo and Juliet. He studied at HB Studios in New York City for three years before being accepted into the Actors Studio. Wilder has appeared in a number of Broadway plays, including “Mama Courage and Her Baby” and “Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” In 1963, he met actor and director Mel Brooks.

Wilder made her film debut in the 1967 film “Bonnie and Clyde.” He then played the supporting role of “Leo Bloom” in The Producer (1968). Wilder played the breakout role of “Willy Wonka” in the 1971 musical fantasy film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. Wilder plays Jim, “Waco Kid” in Blazing Saddles, and Dr. Frederick Frankenstein in Young Frankenstein. Both films were directed by Mel Brooks and released in 1974. Wilder’s other films include Frisco the Kid (1979) with Harrison Ford, Stirred Madness (1980) with Richard Pryor and Charles Grodin (Charles Grodin) in The Woman in Red (1984).

He also had an adopted daughter from his second marriage, named Catherine.
