Siskel graduated from Yale University with Pulitzer Prize-winning John Hersey. Hersey helped Siskel find a job at the Chicago Tribute in 1969. Before meeting the Chicago Sun-Times film critic Robert Ebert in 1975, he served as the paper’s film critic and co-hosted a show called Sneak Previews on a local PBS station. Siskel and Ebert developed their “thumbs” Up, Thumbs Down” rating system, and a teaser trailer aired nationwide on PBS in 1977. They left PBS to syndicate and hosted a film program distributed by the Tribune Broadcasting Company and later by The Walt Disney Company. The title was changed to Siskel & Ebert & the Movies, but was later changed to Siskel & Ebert only. Siskel also served as a reporter for the television series CBS This Morning from 1990 to 1996 and Good Morning America from 1996 to 1999. As a duo, Siskel and Ebert have been nominated for seven Primetime Emmys and three Daytime Emmys. Gene Siskel died on February 20, 1999, at the age of 53, of complications from surgery related to a cancerous brain tumor.
