Born Eugene Dixon in Chicago, Illinois in 1937, Gene Chandler grew up on the South Side of the Windy City and began playing music in the ’50s. Chandler performed with The Gaytones before joining The Dukays as their singer in 1957.

He was drafted into the military shortly after joining the band, but returned after being discharged in 1960. Chandler and the Dukes won their first recording contract. He released the song “Duke Count” as a solo and sold over a million copies in a month. The song sat on the Billboard charts for over three weeks. Soon after, Chandler took on the role of Count Duke, wearing a cape, monocle, and top hat, and using crutches. He appeared on screen as Duke in “Don’t Knock the Twist” with Chubby Checker in 1962. His singles continued to be hugely popular, and soon Chandler started his own production company and record label. His single “Groovy Situation” became the second biggest hit of his career. Chandler ventured into discotheques in the late ’70s. He was later inducted into the R&B Foundation in 1997, and his song “The Earl Duke” is part of the Grammy Hall of Fame and on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of 500 Songs That Shaped the Genre. Chandler continued to perform throughout the United States, most frequently in his hometown and in Las Vegas, Nevada.
