Patterson’s college coaching career began at his alma mater, where he held a graduate assistant position with the Wildcats in 1982. Patterson then accepted the linebacker coaching position at Tennessee Tech for the next two seasons. He coached linebacker for one season at UC Davis before being named Cal Lutheran University’s defensive coordinator in 1988. Patterson went on to coach at Pittsburgh State and Sonoma State before getting his first head coaching gig with the Oregon Lightning Bolts, a folded professional football league in its first season. Before starting, 1992. He then returned to Utah, the Navy, New Mexico and TCU for coaching positions. In 2000, after two seasons as the Horned Frogs defensive coordinator, Patterson was promoted to head coach, a position he has held since. Midway through the 2014 season, Patterson had a 129-45 head coaching record and a 7-4 Bowl record, including a Rose Bowl win in 2011.
