Gary Marshall is an American film director, actor and producer. He wrote the ABC sitcom “Happy Days” and directed films such as “Pretty Woman” and “Runaway Bride.” Marshall was born Gary Kent Masciarelli on November 13, 1934, in the Bronx, New York. His mother, Marjorie, is a dance instructor and his father, Anthony, is a film director. He has two sisters, Penny and Ronny. Marshall attended DeWitt Clinton High School, followed by Northwestern University. He graduated in 1956 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He also writes for the university’s Northwest Daily News as a sports writer.

Before acting and directing, Marshall was a comedy writer. He wrote jokes for Joey Bishop, Phil Foster and others, and later on Jack Paar’s Tonight Show. Marshall moved to Hollywood in the early 1960s to work with director Jerry Belson. The pair contributed to a number of TV shows, including The Dick Van Dijk Show and The Danny Thomas Show. They created the sitcom “Hey Landlord,” which aired on NBC in 1966-67.
Marshall’s most successful show, Happy Hour, premiered on ABC on January 15, 1974. The series ran for 10 years with 255 episodes. He also created the Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy and Makin’ It collections. Marshall’s feature film directorial debut, “Young Doctor in Love,” was released in 1982. His notable films include Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts, The Princess Diaries with Anne Hathaway, Valentine’s Day with Jessica Alba, and most recently Mother’s Day with Jennifer Aniston. Marshall was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1997. His star was placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1983.
