Gary Johnson is an American politician and the 2016 Liberal Party presidential candidate. He is also an author, businessman and founder of Big J Enterprises. Johnson was born on January 1, 1953, in Minot, North Dakota, to parents Lorraine and Earl. He attended Sandia High School and then the University of New Mexico. He graduated in 1975 with a BA in Political Science.

Johnson was a businessman before entering politics. He founded the mechanical contracting company Big J Enterprises in 1976. Big J quickly grew into one of the top construction companies in Mexico. The company makes millions while providing jobs for hundreds of workers. Big J was sold in 1999.
In 1994, Johnson defeated Democratic Gov. Bruce King to become the 29th governor of New Mexico. He served from January 1995 to January 2003 and was re-elected for a second term in 1998. During his tenure, Johnson focused on anti-tax policy, an anti-crime platform and voucher reform. He also supports the legalization of marijuana. Johnson ran for president in 2012 as a member of the Liberal Party. He defeated former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld in 2016 for his second U.S. presidency on the Liberal vote. If Johnson hits the 15 percent threshold, he will face Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump in the presidential debates.
