She is the current CEO of Westpac, one of Australia’s “big four” banks. In 2002, she became the first female CEO of a major Australian bank or top 15 company, and as of 2005, she was the highest paid woman in an Australian company.
She became Westpac’s chief executive in 2008. Kelly began working as a teller at Nedcor Bank in 1980 and was transferred to an accelerated training program. In 1986, she began her MBA with her oldest daughter, graduating with honors in 1987. In 1990, she became head of human resources at Nedcor (after giving birth to triplets five months earlier). From early 1992 to 1997, she held various general manager positions at Nedcor. In the mid-1990s, the Kellys were disillusioned with South Africa and wanted to leave. In June 1997 she flew to Sydney to interview with four major banks and was appointed to a senior position at Commonwealth Bank in July 1997. Kelly started at Commonwealth Bank as General Manager of Strategic Marketing in October 1997. By 2002 she was Head of Client Services, running Commonwealth Bank’s extensive branch network, which led to her appointment as Chief Executive Officer of St George’s Bank Officer (after the current CEO died of a heart attack). In 2007, she announced her resignation as chief executive of St George’s Bank, taking the same role at Westpac from 2008, becoming chief executive of Westpac in February 2008. In October 2010, Kelly announced that women would take up 40 percent of Westpac’s top 4000 management positions, a task that was nearly complete in March 2012, The Australian reported. She then announced that 50 per cent of the bank’s senior management would be women by 2017, the same year Westpac celebrated its 200th anniversary.
Gender equality isn’t the only benchmark that has risen under her leadership this year; the bank’s net profit climbed to $3.36 billion in the six months through March, from $3.05 billion a year earlier. As of 2014, Gail Kelly was listed by Forbes as the 56th most powerful woman in the world.
