Gabourey Sidibe is an American film and television actress. She played “Becky Williams” in the Fox TV series “Empire”. Her film credits include Tower Robbery (2011), White Bird in the Snowstorm (2014) and Grimsby (2016). She was nominated for an Oscar for the feature film “Precious” (2009). Sidibe was born on May 6, 1983 in Brooklyn, New York. She grew up near Bedford-Stuyvesant. Her mother Alice Tan Ridley is an R&B singer, and her father Ibnou Sidibe is a taxi driver. The two separated when she was very young. She has a younger brother named Ahmed. Sidibe completed her associate degree in the borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). She studied psychology at the New York City Philanthropy College. She is still taking classes at the City College of New York.

Before acting, Sidibe worked as a receptionist at the non-profit organization “Fresh Air Fund”. Her debut is Lee Daniels’ feature film “Precious” (2009). This film is adapted from Sapphire’s 1996 novel “Push”. She was chosen as the protagonist Clarice “Precious” Jones. This role won her the Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress. She was also nominated for the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. Sidibe played a bully named “Latonia Williams” in “Roar to the Sky” (2011).
