Gabby Douglas is an American rhythmic gymnast and three-time Olympic gold medalist. Known as “Flying Squirrel,” she was the first African-American woman to win the Olympic individual all-around title. Gabby was born to parents Timothy Douglas and Natalie Hawkins on December 31, 1995, in Newport News, Virginia. She has three siblings, Arielle, Joyelle and John. Gabi attended Oak Park High School in Oak Park, California. She graduated in June 2015 at the same time as actress Zendaya Coleman.
Profession
Gabby started her gymnastics training at Gymstrada in 2002. Two years later, she won the Virginia State Gymnastics Championships. She placed fourth in the 2010 Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup. Gabi won her first uneven bars title at the junior level at the 2010 Pan American Championships. She moved to Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 14 to train under Coach Liang Zhou.
Gabby made his senior team debut in 2011. She won gold medals at the World Championships (2011) and the Pacific Rim Championships (2012) as part of Team USA. Gabi competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics and won a gold medal for his performance on the uneven bars. In 2012, she was named Female Athlete of the Year by The Associated Press. Other individual medals include silver at the 2015 World Championships and gold at the 2016 America’s Cup. Gabby was a member of the 2016 Olympic team along with Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Madison Kocian and Laurie Hernandez. She won her third Olympic gold medal in gymnastics.
In 2016, Gabby played herself on Oxygen’s reality series Douglas Family Gold. She was also the subject of the 2014 lifelong biographical film The Rap Douglas Story.
