Frederica Wilson is an American politician, educator, and member of the Democratic Party. She is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the 24th District of Florida. Prior to this, she served as a member of the 33rd District Senate of Florida. Wilson was born Frederica Patricia Smith on November 5, 1942 in Miami, Florida. Her parents are Beulah and Thirlee Smith. She graduated from Northwest High School in Miami. She received a bachelor’s degree from Fisk University (1963) and a master’s degree from Miami University (1972). She majored in elementary education.

Before entering politics, Wilson served as the principal of Skyway Elementary School (1980-92). She joined the Miami-Dade County School Board in 1992. During her tenure, she created the “5000 Excellent Model Projects” in the school mentoring program. The program is designed to help prevent men who are at risk from dropping out of school. Wilson served as a member of the House of Representatives in the 104th District of Florida from November 1998 to November 2002. She represented District 33 from November 2002 to December 2010. She served as the temporary leader of the minority leader and the whip of the minority leader. She supported Barack Obama and Joe Biden during the 2008 presidential election.
Wilson succeeded Kendrick Meek to a seat in the US House of Representatives in the 2010 general election. She was sworn in on January 3, 2011. She represented Florida for the 17th session in the first two years. She started representing District 24 in 2013. Wilson serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Science, Space, and Technology Committee of the House of Representatives. She is also a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Wilson opposed the Tea Party, and she led efforts to combat bullying and bullying. When Trayvon Martin died in 2012, she was very outspoken.
