While at Mississippi State, Smoot earned SEC First Team honors in 1999 and 2000, and was recognized as an All-American in 2000. The Washington Redskins selected Smoot with the 45th overall pick in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft. Smoot played in Washington until 2004, after which he signed a free agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings. Smoot later returned to the Redskins from 2007 to 2009; the cornerback was released after the 2009 season and played just two years on a five-year, $25 million deal. Smoot completed 450 tackles, 21 interceptions and five forced turnovers in 129 career games. He started 104 of them. Smoot has made headlines off the court multiple times. He was involved in the Vikings’ 2005 cruise ship scandal, in which several players allegedly hired prostitutes for sex parties on a boat on Lake Minnetonka. In the spring of 2006, he was charged with disorderly conduct and causing a nuisance to a vessel. Smoot was fined and ordered to attend community service. Later that year, Smoot broke his jaw in a car accident in Mississippi. The accident ended his 2006 NFL season.
