Fred graduated from Harvard University in 1970. His first acting roles were in the 1973 TV series “Love, American Style” and the TV movie “The Girl Most Likely…” and from 1973 to 1974 he played Chris in the TV series “Maud” .
Grandi played Walter in the 1976 TV series Monster Squad. He appeared on the TV series Fantasy Island from 1978 to 1979. He is best known for playing “Gopher” Smith in the series Love Boat from 1977 to 1986. Prior to attending University Grandy was David Eisenhower’s roommate. Grandi became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Iowa’s 6th District in 1987 and served until 1993. He then served in the U.S. House of Representatives for Iowa’s 5th District from 1993 to 1995. In 1994, Grandy lost Iowa’s gubernatorial election by 4 percentage points over incumbent Terry Branstad. From 1995 to 2000, Grandy was President and Chief Executive Officer of Goodwill Industries International. He hosted the Grandy & Andy Morning Show with Andy Parks in Washington, D.C. from 2003 to 2010. He served as a Senior Fellow for National Security Affairs and returned to the stage in 2013 on the New Jersey production of Sleuth. He also hosts the morning show The Grandy Group, a drive-time radio show in Washington, D.C.
