Frederick Steven Couples was born in Seattle on October 3, 1959. His first name was Coppola, but his Italian immigrant grandparents changed it to husband and wife in order to adapt to the new American environment. Fred and his two siblings grew up in a working-class family. He grew up near the Jefferson Park golf course in Seattle. It was here that he cultivated his golf skills since he was a child. Throughout his career, Fred has emphasized that he is completely self-taught and has never hired a swing coach.
In his high school days, Fred’s golf skills became obvious. This led to a golf scholarship that sent Capps to the University of Houston, where he met future PGA Tour player Brian McAllister. In 1978, 19-year-old Fred defeated PGA Tour veteran Don Bis to win the Washington Open.

After becoming a professional player, Fred Couples won his first PGA Tour title at the Kemper Open in 1983. He then won 14 PGA Tour titles, including a major victory in the 1992 Masters.
