Frankie Manning is an American choreographer and dancer who helped popularize the Lindy dance. He was born on May 26, 1914 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was raised by his mother in Harlem, New York. Manning’s early inspiration came from his mother, who was also a dancer. As a child, he practiced dancing with the help of a broom. Manning performed and competed at the Savoy Ballroom in the 1930s. During World War II, he also served in the U.S. Army.
Profession
Manning became a member of the professional dance group Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers in 1935. Other members include Herbert White, Al Minns and Leon James. The group toured together and created several films. After Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers disbanded, Manning formed his own dance group, the Congaroos. They lasted from 1947 to 1955. He later worked as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service.
Manning returned to dancing in the 1980s. His revival was inspired by his former teammate Al Minns, who has been teaching Lindy Hop in New York City. Manning continues to serve as Minns’ instructor and choreographer. He teaches in the United States and parts of Europe. Manning works with “The Rhythm Hot Shots” and regularly teaches at the Herrang Dance Camp in Sweden. His autobiography, Frankie Manning: Lindy Hope’s Ambassador, was published in 2007.

Frankie Manning passed away on April 27, 2009 at the age of 94. The cause of his death was reportedly pneumonia. His body was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York. Manning was married to “Gloria Holloway” until their divorce was finalized in 1989. He lived with partner Judy Pritchett before his death. He has three children, Chaz, Frank Jr. and Marion. He was inducted into the National Dance Museum and Hall of Fame in 2009.
