Frances McDormand is an American Oscar-winning actress. She has achieved success in film, television and drama. Her film works include Fargo (1997), Three Billboards Outside Ebin, Missouri (2018), Almost Fame (2000) and Miniseries Olive Kitridge (2014). She won the Tony Award for Best Actress for her “Good People”. Frances Louise McDormand, formerly known as Cynthia Ann Smith, was born on June 23, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois. She was raised by adoptive parents Noreen and Vernon McDormand. Noreen serves as a nurse/receptionist and Vernon serves as the pastor of the disciples of Christ. The family moved around and then settled in Moneson, Pennsylvania. McDomond attended Morneson High School. She received a bachelor’s degree in drama from Bethany College (1979) and a master’s degree in drama from Yale University (1982).

McDomond was originally a stage actor. She played an unforgettable role “Mrs Macbeth” in high school. After graduating from college, she moved to New York City, where she lived with future actress/producer Holly Hunter. The two had previously taken drama classes together at Yale. McDormand’s professional stage debut was the “Last Carnival” produced in Trinidad and Tobago in 1982. Her film debut is Blood Simple (1984). The film was written, produced and directed by the Coen brothers (Joel, Ethan). It received most of the positive reviews and grossed $3.8 million at the box office. She subsequently played an important role in Primal Fear (1996), Madeleine (1998) and Wonder Boy (2000). McDormand played “Elaine Miller” in the comedy “Almost Fame” (2000), a domineering mother. She played rivals in the TV series “Northland” (2005) with Charlize Theron and Sean Bing. In 2011, she won the Tony Award for Best Actress for her “Good People”. McDormand starred in the HBO miniseries Olive Kitteridge (2014). The show won her two Primetime Emmy Awards, one of which was an Outstanding Actress Award in a limited series. McDormand’s film works include “Friends of Money” (2006) with Jennifer Aniston, “Reading the Book” (2008) with George Clooney, and “Friends of Money” with Amy Adams. The Life of Miss Pettigrew (2008) and the Promised Land (2012) with Matt Damon. She voiced the character “Chantal Dubois” in “Madagascar 3” (2012). She also voiced the animated films “Good Dinosaur” (2015) and “Canis Island” (2018).
