She was raised by adoptive parents Noreen and Vernon McDormand. Noreen serves as a nurse/receptionist and Vernon serves as the pastor of the disciples of Christ. The family moved around and then settled in Moneson, Pennsylvania. McDomond attended Morneson High School. She received a bachelor’s degree in drama from Bethany College (1979) and a master’s degree in drama from Yale University (1982).
