Frances Bean Cobain was born on August 18, 1992 in Los Angeles, California. Her name was inspired by Vaseline guitarist Francis McKee, while her middle name came from what her father thought she looked like a kidney bean on ultrasound. Love told Vanity Fair that she and Kurt started a heroin binge in January 1992 (the month she was pregnant with Francis), saying, “We got some drugs. Then we got high and went to SNL. In After that, I was on heroin for a few months.” The article led to an investigation by the Los Angeles County Department of Children’s Services into Kurt and Courtney, which removed Francis from them two weeks after she was born. Francis was sent back to Love and Cobain after the case against them was dropped.
