Early life and career
Florence Pugh was born in Oxford, England in 1996, the daughter of dancer Deborah and restaurateur Bill Clinton. She has three siblings: Toby, Arabella and Rafaela, the first two are also actors. As a child, Pugh suffered from tracheomalacia, which led to multiple hospital visits. When she was three years old, the family moved to Sotogrande, Spain, hoping the warmer weather would be good for her health. They stayed there until Pugh was six years old, then they returned to Oxford. Back in the UK, Pugh went to Wychwood School and St Edward’s School, but was unhappy that these institutions did little to support her acting ambitions. From 2013 to 2016, she performed cover songs on YouTube under the name Flossie Rose.
While still in school in 2014, Pugh made his debut in the British suspense drama “Falling” as a precocious teenager at a British girls’ school. Her partner, Maisie Williams, plays her troubled best friend. For her performance, Pugh was nominated for Best British Newcomer at the BFI London Film Festival.
Acting breakthrough
Pugh gained wider recognition in 2016, when she played a repressed, violent teenage bride in the independent film Lady Macbeth. 2019 was Pugh’s biggest year yet, when she received international acclaim for her performance in three major films. First, she played British professional wrestler Paige in the biographical sports drama “Fighting the Family,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Based on the Max Fisher documentary The Wrestler: Fighting the Family, the film stars Jack Lowden, Lena Headey, Nick Frost, Vince Vaughn and Dwayne Johnson co-starring. Next, Pugh starred in Ari Aster’s horror film A Midsummer Night’s Fright, playing a woman who gets involved in a deadly cult after traveling to Sweden with her boyfriend. Finally, Pugh played Amy March in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel Little Women.
