Fidel Castro is a Cuban political leader. He was the 16th Prime Minister of Cuba and the 17th President of Cuba. His political views are based on Marxism-Leninism and Cuban nationalism. Castro was born on August 13, 1926 near Cuban Bilan. His father Angel Castro y Argiz is a sugarcane planter and his mother Lina Ruz Gonzales is a maid. He has several siblings, including Juanita, Raul, Ramon, Angela, Emma, and Agustina. Castro attended high school in Colegio de Belen, Havana. He graduated from the University of Havana in 1950 with a law degree.
Profession
In 1953, Castro was imprisoned after leading a failed campaign against the Fulgencio Batista regime. In 1955, he was released from prison under an amnesty agreement. Castro led the Cuban revolution and used guerrilla warfare to overthrow Batista in 1959. From February 1959 to December 1976, he served as the 16th Prime Minister of Cuba. During his tenure, Castro repelled the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961. His alliance with the Soviet Union triggered the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
Castro was elected as president of Cuba in 1976. He held that office for more than 30 years before stepping down in February 2008. He was succeeded by his younger brother Raul Castro who became the 18th President of Cuba. Positions include Secretary-General of the Non-Aligned Movement (1979-83, 2006-08) and First Secretary of the Communist Party Central Committee (1961-2011). In December 2014, he won the China Confucius Peace Prize.
