Ernestine Anderson is a jazz and blues singer with a career spanning more than five decades. She was born on November 11, 1928 in Houston, Texas. She has a twin sister named “Josephine”. Anderson sang in her local church choir as a teenager. In 1944, she moved with her family to Seattle, Washington. She attended Garfield High School and sang with the Bumps Blackwell Junior Band.

Anderson started touring at the age of 18. She traveled and performed with the Johnny Otis Band for a year. She later played with the Lionel Hampton Band from 1952 to 1953. Anderson recorded her first recording on Gigi Gryce’s 1955 album Nica’s Tempo. She recorded her first album, Hot Cargo, in 1956, and it was released by Mercury Records in 1958.

In 1976, Anderson signed with Concord Records. In 1977, she released a series of albums with Concord, starting with “Hello, Like Before”. She then released the Grammy-nominated albums “Never Make Your Move Too Soon (1981)” and “Big City (1983)”. Anderson left Concord and signed with Quincy Jones’ Qwest label in 1993. Her albums “Now and Then (1993)” and “Blues, Dues & Love News (1996)” received two Grammy nominations.

Ernestine Anderson passed away on March 10, 2016 at the age of 87. The cause of death was not disclosed. Anderson was married three times. She leaves behind three children, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
