Erin Ford is best known for co-founding the Ford Model Company with her husband, Gerald “Jerry” Ford. Their company is well known all over the world and is considered to be one of the most prestigious modeling agencies to date and one of the oldest.
Ford was born in Manhattan, New York in March 1922. She started modeling in college before graduating from Barnard in 1943, when she modeled for the Harry Conover Modeling Agency. She then met and eloped with Jerry in 1944. After she got pregnant, she started working as a secretary for various models for her services at $65 to $75 a month. In 1947, after Jerry returned from the war, the two decided to start a modeling agency, even though Erin was the only one with industry knowledge. Despite bringing in brand new and having a “bad” position, they made a $250,000 profit in their first year and are considered the third most successful company in the industry. The Fords had four children together, and their third child, Katie, took over the modeling agency in 1955. They remained married until Jerry’s death in 2008. Erin followed him to his death in January 2014.
