early life
Brockovich was born on June 22, 1960 in Lawrence, Kansas. Her mother, Betty Jo, is a journalist and her father, Frank Pattee, is an industrial engineer. She has two brothers and one sister. After graduating from Lawrence High School, she attended Kansas State University and then transferred to Wade College in Dallas, Texas, where she earned an associate degree in applied arts.

Brockovich worked at K-Mart, then entered beauty pageants, and then began working as legal counsel for Edward L. Masry, an attorney in California. In 1993, she began investigating a range of illnesses among residents of Hinkley, California. Hinkley is home to a compressor station built in 1952 as part of a natural gas pipeline. Between 1952 and 1966, Pacific Gas & Electric used hexavalent chromium to combat corrosion at the station, and the wastewater was discharged into an unlined pond near the site, which then seeped into groundwater. Residents of the two square miles near the factory had an unusually high prevalence of the disease, and Brockovich was instrumental in organizing the case against PG&E. Brockovich’s work on the case inspired the 2000 feature film “Erin Brockovich,” in which Julia Roberts played the lead. After the case, Brokovich continued to work with Edward Masri and was involved in a number of other anti-pollution lawsuits. One of the lawsuits again targets another PG & E compressor station in California. The case was settled in 2006 for $335 million. She has also worked on cases surrounding pollution and other environmental issues related to human disease in Missouri, Texas and New York.
Although she never attended law school, Brokovich’s work in the legal field has been recognized with several honorary degrees. In May 2005, she received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the Lewis and Clark School of Law in Portland, Oregon. She also received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree in Humanities from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and an honorary Master of Letters degree from Jones International University in Colorado.

Brokovich was married three times. Her first husband, Sean Brown, is the father of her children Matthew and Katie. She then married Steven Brockovich and had their third child, Elizabeth. After the relationship ended, she married actor and musician Eric L. Ellis. Brockovich lives in the same house in Agoura Hills, Calif., that she bought after the original PG&E case was settled.
