Eric Ivan Cantor, born June 6, 1963 in Richmond, Virginia, currently represents Virginia, 7th Congressional District, in the United States House of Representatives. Cantor got his start in politics while studying at George Washington University, when he was an intern with Virginia House Republican Tom Bulley, who served as Bulley’s driver in the 1982 campaign.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1985, Cantor received his Juris Doctor degree from William and Mary Law School in 1988 and a master’s degree in real estate development from Columbia University in 1989. He worked for his company for ten years before diving fully into politics. My father’s business is mainly legal work and real estate development. Cantor’s first forays into statecraft began in 1992, when he began serving in the Virginia House of Representatives. He held that position until 2001, when he entered the House of Representatives and took over the leadership of the party. The latter happened in 2002, when Roy Blunt designated Cantor as the GOP’s top deputy whip, the top job in the GOP caucus. He then served as the House Minority Whip from 2009 to 2011 before becoming House Majority Leader in the 112th Congress convened on January 3, 2011. In addition, he is the highest-ranking congressional Jewish member in history and the only Jewish Republican currently in Congress.
