early life
Eminem was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on October 17, 1972, his original name is Marshall Bruce Mathers III. Before they settled in Warren, Michigan, his youth wandered around Missouri with his single mother. Before their divorce, his parents Marshall Sr. and Deborah “Debbie” Rae Nelson actually played in a band called Daddy Warbucks, mainly in the Midwest at the Ramada Hotel.
After the divorce, Debbie and Marshall traveled back and forth between Michigan and Missouri. They never lived in one place for more than a year, mainly with their family. As a child, Marshall was a lonely man, often bullied at school. When he was a teenager, they lived in a predominantly black neighborhood in Detroit.
Eminem’s original dream was to become a cartoonist, but after he heard his first rap song “Reckless-Featured with Ice-T”, his dream changed. This is the soundtrack of the movie “Breakin'”. This album was a gift from his half-brother Ronnie.
At the age of 14, he adopted the rap role “M&M” (based on his initials). At the age of 17, he dropped out of high school. He did a series of odd jobs while writing songs and participating in freestyle rap competitions in the town.
slim Shady
Marshall finally won the recognition and respect of the local hip-hop music industry in Detroit. He joined a group called Bassmint Productions, which was later renamed Soul Intent. He recorded music with Mashin’ Duck Records and FBT Productions, and also worked as a minimum wage job for chefs and dishwashers. Through a record company called Web Entertainment, Eminem released his first album “Infinite” in 1996.
At some point during this time, he adopted the more avant-garde and violent character “Slim Shady”. As another self, Slim Shady, he raps on drugs, sex, violence, rape and murder. In the spring of 1997, he recorded “The Slim Shady EP” released by Web Entertainment in the winter of the same year.
Meet with Dr. Dre
In March 1998, Eminem appeared in the unsigned hype column of The Source magazine. Soon after, he was kicked out of his home and decided to go to Los Angeles to participate in the rap Olympics. He ranked second, but more importantly, a staff member of Interscope Records liked what he heard and passed The Slim Shady EP to the company’s CEO Jimmy Iovine.
Jimmy Iovine played this album for Dr. Dre. He recently launched his own record company Aftermath Records and is looking for new talent to sign. Dre later described his initial reaction to Eminem’s demonstration in the following way:
“I thought: What the fuck is this!? Who the fuck is that? In my entire career in the music industry, I have never found anything in a demo tape or CD. When Jimmy played this, I Say,’Find him. Now.'”
Eminem was found and quickly signed with Aftermath Entertainment. Dre was the executive producer to re-record and polish The Slim Shady EP.
The album immediately achieved commercial and critic success. It eventually obtained 4X Platinum certification in the United States alone and won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album for Eminem.
His next album is definitely a monster. In May 2000, he released The Marshall Mathers LP. This is the fastest-selling hip-hop album in history, eventually selling more than 21 million copies. His next effort, The Eminem Show in 2002, sold more than 27 million albums.
At the time of writing, Eminem has sold more than 170 million albums worldwide. This is enough to make him the ninth most-selling music artist of all time, second only to Pink Floyd, Rihanna, Zeppelin, Madonna, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Elvis and Phi The head band.
Shadowy record/50 cents
In 1999, Eminem founded his own brand under Aftermath Records, which he called Shady Records. The first actor to sign with the company was D12, a group of rappers that Eminem knew from Detroit.
In 2002, during the filming of the movie “8 Miles,” Eminem was introduced to a New York underground rapper named 50 Cent. Eminem has listened to several mixtapes from the 1950s and is eager to sign with him. 50 Cent soon became the first solo artist signed by Shady Records. In the same year, Shady Records released the original soundtrack to 8 Mile, which sold more than 11 million copies worldwide.
50 Cent’s first album released in February 2003 will continue to sell 14 million albums worldwide. In his career so far, 50 Cent has sold 30 million albums.
